The Connected HPV Continuum: From Prevention to Follow-Up

Dr. Emma Mitchell, PhD, RN, CPH, FAAN
Associate Professor of Nursing and an NIH-funded nurse scientist at the University of Virginia School of Nursing

This symposium explores how connected tools and technologies are strengthening every stage of the HPV continuum: from prevention to patient follow‑up. We will begin with new real world HPV vaccine insights and an overview of diagnostic innovations such as the BD OnclarityTM HPV Assay, showcasing extended genotyping and self‑collection, and cutting-edge technology like mHealth (mobile health) interventions.

Dr. Emma Mitchell, PhD, RN, CPH, FAAN, will share real‑world examples of how digital tools can close follow‑up gaps, drawing on her work in Nicaragua, Appalachia and Charlottesville, Virginia. She will discuss HPV specific implementation tools designed to support patient follow up including features, such as navigation, transportation, and insurance barriers. This highlights how such tools can streamline communication, enhance adherence, and ensure continuity of care.

Together, these perspectives demonstrate how vaccines, diagnostics, and digital tools are transforming follow-up and patient retention—two of the most persistent gaps in cervical cancer prevention. Attendees will gain a forward-looking understanding of how integrated solutions reduce loss to follow-up, empower patients, and strengthen the path toward equitable cervical cancer prevention.
