2006 Educate the Educators’ Regional Meetings

This year promises to be a pivotal one for clinicians caring for women with human papillomavirus (HPV). The expected introduction of HPV vaccines in mid-2006 and the widespread adoption of HPV DNA testing have created a need for educating the clinical community about the role of HPV infections in anogenital disease, appropriate clinical usages of HPV DNA testing, and about the potential benefits of vaccination against HPV.  Since HPV vaccines have been developed so rapidly there has been little time for vaccine preparedness efforts among clinicians—with the greatest challenge being in the smaller and mid-sized communities that lack clinicians who have expertise in this area.

To help meet this need, ASCCP has joined with Merck and Company, Digene Corporation, and Roche Molecular Systems, to develop the “Educate the Educators’ Program,” a series of training courses and home study assessment programs designed to educate ASCCP clinicians to become local community experts and ‘second generation trainers’ for Local Education Programs (LEP).  These ASCCP second generation trainers may then provide consultation and continuing medical education to their communities; venues appropriate for local HPV vaccine programs would include grand rounds, in-service opportunities, patient education forums, risk management and quality improvement meetings, and professional association/society meetings.

These half-day training courses will begin at the ASCCP Biennial Meeting on March 15, with additional sessions to be held throughout the year.  In addition, training will also be offered through a web-based teleconference training course on three separate dates.

Training course participants will receive Speaker Lecture kits prepared by the ASCCP.   The Speaker Lecture kit will consist of PowerPoint presentations suitable for both CME and non-CME lecture formats, reprints of important published articles pertaining to HPV and HPV vaccines, guidance available from various sources on HPV vaccination and the clinical uses of HPV DNA testing, and more.

To assist those who undergo the training and elect to provide outreach to colleagues, ASCCP will maintain a Speaker Support Center, providing access to additional teaching resources, updated slides, and up-to-date literature review.  The Speaker Support Center will also provide contacts with industry sponsors and others who can facilitate local speaking engagements.

Lastly, as we recognize that not all members will be able to attend one of the training sessions, we are preparing a one-hour CD-ROM home study lecture entitled, HPV Vaccines.  In June 2006, one copy of the CD-ROM will be provided to each ASCCP member in good standing.   We will then post this lecture to the ASCCP’s Lower Genital Tract Disease Online CME Series, a web-based learning program featuring free online lectures to ASCCP members and non-members.  Both the CD-ROM and the online lecture will be available for free CME credit.
