The 2006 Consensus Guidelines for the Management of Women with Abnormal Cervical Cancer Screening Tests and the Management of Women with Cervical Intraepithelial Neoplasia or Adenocarcinoma in situ were published in the October 2007 issue of the American Journal of Obstetrics and Gynecology. Both the cytology and histology guidelines were also reprinted in the October 2007 issue of the Journal of Lower Genital Tract Disease. Algorithms for the guidelines were published solely in the Journal of Lower Genital Tract Disease.

• 2009 Algorithm: Use of HPV Genotyping to Manage HPV HR * Positive/Cytology Negative Women 30 Years and Older
  Based on the data available at the time, the 2006 Consensus Guidelines included a recommendation that in cytology negative women 30 years and older who are HPV DNA positive (for any of the 13 or 14 high-risk types of HPV detected by the high-risk HPV assays) molecular genotyping assays that detect HPV 16 and 18 would be clinically useful for determining which women should be referred for immediate colposcopy, and which could be followed-up with repeat cytology and high-risk HPV testing in 12 months. Because a FDA-approved HPV genotyping assay was not available in 2006, this recommendation was made contingent on approval of a HPV genotyping assay by the FDA. The first HPV genotyping assay was approved in March 2009 and based on this approval we are releasing the Management Algorithm for Using HPV Genotyping to Manage HPV High-risk Positive / Cytology Negative Women 30 Years and Older.

  The Bethesda System web-based atlas consists of 349 images representing a range of morphologic findings seen on both conventional smears and liquid based preparations. The majority are from cervical specimens; however, some anal-rectal samples are also included.
  
  For each image, the preparation type, morphologic criteria and interpretation using the 2001 Bethesda System terminology are provided. Clinical history, explanatory notes and follow-up are included if available. The database is searchable by keywords, Bethesda System terminology, or Bethesda atlas chapters.
