J. Thomas Cox, MD is the Director of the Gynecology and Colposcopy Clinic, Health Services,
University of California, Santa Barbara (UCSB), and Past Executive Medical Director of the
National HPV and Cervical Cancer Prevention Resource Center, a part of the American Social
Health Association. He graduated from the University of Oregon in 1968 and from Baylor College
of Medicine in 1972. Following a residency in obstetrics and gynecology at Kaiser Permanente
Hospital in San Francisco, he practiced obstetrics and gynecology in Marin County, California.
Since the mid-1970s his main interest has been in colposcopy and lower genital tract disease.
Dr. Cox published two of the earliest studies on the clinical utility of testing for HPV and
has wide experience with HPV testing in a variety of clinical settings. Dr. Cox has been active
in the American Society for Colposcopy and Cervical Pathology (ASCCP) since 1989, and is on
the Board of Directors. As Chair of the ASCCP Practice Committee from 1994 to 2000, he was
responsible for leading the Committee in writing the first ASCCP Guidelines for management of
Pap abnormalities. Dr. Cox is an Associate Editor of the Journal of Lower Genital Tract
Disease, and co-author of the colposcopy textbook Modern Colposcopy Textbook and Atlas,
Second Edition. He has authored eleven textbook chapters and dozens of articles on the
subject of HPV and Pap management. From 1999-2001 he served as Chair of the Steering Committee
for the National Cancer Institute's ASCUS/LSIL Triage Study, otherwise known as ALTS. From
2000-2002 he served as the clinical advisor to the NCI Costa Rica HPV Vaccine Trial and is
presently on the Data and Safety Monitoring Board (DSMB) for the Quadiravalent HPV Vaccine Trials. He is
the clinical advisor for cervical cancer screening for the Bureau of Primary Health Care, a
division of the United States Department of Health & Human Services. He was on the American
Cancer Society's (ACS) Cervical Screening Guidelines Committee, and is presently serving on
the ACS HPV Vaccine Advisory Group, the ACS Gynecologic Cancer Advisory Board, and the ACS
HPV Vaccine Policy Review Group. In April 2003 he was awarded the European Research
Organization in Genital Neoplasia (EUROGIN) Recognition and Distinguished Service Award.
He is the immediate Past President of the ASCCP.


Charles J. Dunton, MD

Dr. Dunton graduated from Jefferson Medical College and received his Ob/Gyn training at Lankenau Hospital. After serving in the U.S. Public Health Service, he completed his training with a fellowship in Gynecologic Oncology at the University of Pennsylvania. Dr. Dunton's interests have included diagnosis and treatment of premalignant/malignant conditions of the cervix. Particular interests on new technologies in screening and treatment. Dr. Dunton has published on the use of these new technologies in the diagnosis of cervical dysplasia and new techniques in the treatment of cervical dysplasia and cancer.
Dr. Dunton's interest in ovarian carcinoma has included novel approaches to treatment such as vaccine therapy and novel pharmacologic agents. Dr. Dunton is also interested in medical education and has authored CD-ROM's on techniques for the treatment and diagnosis of cervical dysplasia which are widely distributed through the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists. Dr. Dunton is currently a fellow in the American College of Surgeons and maintains an active interest in teaching and research. Dr. Dunton is on the Board of Directors of the American Society for Colposcopy and Cervical Pathology.

Hope K. Haefner, MD is a Professor in the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology at the University of Michigan Hospitals. She completed her residency in obstetrics and gynecology and fellowship in gynecologic pathology at the University of Michigan.
Dr. Haefner is interested in diseases of the lower genital tract. She is the Secretary for the American Society for Colposcopy and Cervical Pathology (ASCCP), the Secretary General for the International Society for the Study of Vulvovaginal Disease (ISSVD), and the Assistant Treasurer of the International Federation for Cervical Pathology and Colposcopy. She is currently the director of the University of Michigan Center for Vulvar Diseases.
Another special interest she has is in education. She is former chair of the Committee on Continuing Medical Education for the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists (ACOG). Additionally, she is actively involved in educational projects with the ASCCP and the ISSVD.


Beth Colvin Huff, MSN, NP

Beth Colvin Huff, MSN, NP is an Associate in the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology at Vanderbilt University where she is a nurse colposcopist and the Colposcopy Clinic Coordinator.
She received her BSN and MSN from Vanderbilt University School of Nursing and worked for many years at Vanderbilt as the Clinical Nurse Specialist in Gynecologic Oncology. She was the national president of the Society of Gynecologic Nurse Oncologists from1990-1992.
She began attending colposcopy courses in the mid-1980s and completed her formal education and preceptorship in 1997. She passed the ASCCP CRA exam in 1998. She has been a member of the ASCCP for over 20 years and has taught in many of their educational courses. She was previously a Member at Large on the Board of Directors and continues to co-chair the Advanced Practice Clinician Task Force.


Herschel W. Lawson, MD

Dr. Lawson is a board certified obstetrician gynecologist with over thirty five years of clinical practice experience in both private and public settings. He is currently a Women's Health Policy Consultant, and an Assistant Clinical Professor of Gynecology and Obstetrics at Emory University School of Medicine. Dr. Lawson retired in January, 2009, from the Commissioned Corps of the U.S. Public Health Service and from the Division of Cancer Prevention and Control, at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), Atlanta, GA. At CDC, he served as Medical Director of the National Breast and Cervical Cancer Early Detection Program for more than ten years and as a clinical consultant to other CDC Cancer Division program activities since 1993. Dr. Lawson completed his Ob-Gyn residency at the Oregon Health and Sciences University in 1973, and is an alumnus of the Epidemic Intelligence Service (1988) at CDC. Besides 12 years of private OB-Gyn practice in Portland, OR, he served as a general medical officer and Ob-Gyn in the Indian Health Service, and as a medical epidemiologist in the Division of Reproductive Health at the CDC. Dr. Lawson is a graduate of the University of Washington (UW) (1963) and its Medical School (1967), in Seattle. He is author or co-author of five textbook chapters, several World Health Organization and International Agency for Research in Cancer (IARC) publications, more than 70 scientific articles published in both CDC and peer-reviewed journals on reproductive health, cancer screening and early detection, and HPV vaccine use, and numerous abstracts of presentations made in the United States, Canada, Mexico, and Europe. Dr. Lawson received several U.S. Public Health Service individual and group awards during his government service, is a member of the American Society for Colposcopy and Cervical Pathology (ASCCP) and currently serves on several ASCCP committees, including the Enduring Materials Committee.

Dr. Stu Massad is a member of the Division of Gynecologic Oncology at the Washington University School of Medicine. He was also a member of the Board of Directors of the ASCCP and was co-author of the 2001 and 2006 ASCCP guidelines on management of abnormal cervical cytology and CIN. His research interests include preinvasive disease of the female lower genital tract and gynecologic manifestations of HIV disease.

Diane Solomon, M.D. is a Senior Investigator at the National Cancer Institute. She was instrumental in the development and evolution of the Bethesda System for communicating the results of cervical cytology. Dr. Solomon co-directed the National Cancer Institute (NCI) ASCUS and LSIL Triage Study (ALTS) of over 5,000 women to determine the optimal management of equivocal and mildly abnormal Pap tests. The results of ALTS have informed the development of ASCCP consensus guidelines for management of women with abnormal cytology results and CIN. Currently, Dr. Solomon is working with a team conducting an NCI sponsored clinical trial of a prophylactic HPV vaccine in Costa Rica. She has authored or co-authored over 100 publications in peer review journals in the area of cervical cancer screening, detection and prevention.

Dr. Mark Spitzer is the Chairman of the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology at Brookdale
University Hospital and Medical Center and Clinical Professor of Obstetrics and Gynecology
at Weill Medical College of Cornell University. Dr. Spitzer is a recognized educator and
thought leader in the field of colposcopy and lower genital tract disease. He has held numerous
leadership positions in the American Society for Colposcopy and Cervical Pathology (ASCCP) and
has been on their Board of Directors since 1994. He served as the President of the ASCCP from
March 2006 through March 2008. Dr. Spitzer graduated from the Albert Einstein College of
Medicine in 1979 and did his residency in Obstetrics and Gynecology at the Albert Einstein
College of Medicine. Dr. Spitzer has been involved with the development of many educational
resources in the field of colposcopy. He is co-editor of a book Colposcopy Principles and
Practice: An Integrated Textbook and Atlas, and he has authored many textbook chapters,
original reports in the peer-reviewed literature and review articles. He has developed
many other educational materials on behalf of the ASCCP and the American College of Obstetricians
and Gynecologists (ACOG). Dr. Spitzer serves as an Editor for the Journal of Lower Genital
Tract Disease and is an editorial reviewer for many prestigious journals.


Alan G. Waxman, MD, MPH

Alan G. Waxman, MD, MPH is professor of obstetrics and gynecology at the University of New Mexico School of Medicine. He is also medical director of the University Center for Women's Health and director of the colposcopy clinics at UNM.
Dr. Waxman has been an active teacher of colposcopy for over 15 years. He is director for the Indian Health Service's colposcopy training program and has been active on the faculty of ASCCP's Comprehensive Colposcopy Courses. Dr.Waxman is co-chairman of ASCCP's Mentorship Committee and Residency Education Committee. He is on the Federal Medical Advisory Board of the National Breast and Cervical Cancer Early Detection Program and has served on the medical advisory committees of the New Mexico and Navajo Nation BCCEDP. Dr. Waxman has written numerous journal articles and textbook chapters on cervical cancer screening.

Management of Conflicts of Interest and Contributed Funds
As an accredited provider of CME credit, ASCCP is required to comply with the ACCME's Standards of Commercial Support and has implemented a management process to ensure that anyone who is in a position to affect the content of the educational activity (e.g., faculty, planners, etc.) has disclosed to us all relevant financial relationships with any commercial interest and has ensured that those relationships do not influence presentation materials. All faculty have agreed to base their presentations on best available evidence.
