VIN Introduction

In 1986, after a review of the various terminologies and their pathologic criteria, the International Society for the Study of Vulvovaginal Disease recommended that the multiple terms used to describe intraepithelial neoplasia of the vulva be combined into a single category called Vulvar Intraepithelial Neoplasia (VIN). The VIN terminology was also recommended by the International Society of Gynecological Pathologists’ committee on vulvar non-neoplastic disorders and accepted by the World Health Organization. In 2004, the ISSVD published the current terminology for VIN. Over the past few decades, the VIN incidence has increased rapidly.
