Herschel W. Lawson, MD

Women's Health Policy Consultant, Assistant Clinical Professor of Gynecology and Obstetrics - Emory University School of Medicine, Atlanta, Georgia

Dr. Lawson is a board certified obstetrician gynecologist with over thirty five years of clinical practice experience in both private and public settings. He is currently a Women's Health Policy Consultant, and an Assistant Clinical Professor of Gynecology and Obstetrics at Emory University School of Medicine. Dr. Lawson retired in January, 2009, from the Commissioned Corps of the U.S. Public Health Service and from the Division of Cancer Prevention and Control, at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), Atlanta, GA. At CDC, he served as Medical Director of the National Breast and Cervical Cancer Early Detection Program for more than ten years and as a clinical consultant to other CDC Cancer Division program activities since 1993. Dr. Lawson completed his Ob-Gyn residency at the Oregon Health and Sciences University in 1973, and is an alumnus of the Epidemic Intelligence Service (1988) at CDC. Besides 12 years of private OB-Gyn practice in Portland, OR, he served as a general medical officer and Ob-Gyn in the Indian Health Service, and as a medical epidemiologist in the Division of Reproductive Health at the CDC. Dr. Lawson is a graduate of the University of Washington (UW) (1963) and its Medical School (1967), in Seattle. He is author or co-author of five textbook chapters, several World Health Organization and International Agency for Research in Cancer (IARC) publications, more than 70 scientific articles published in both CDC and peer-reviewed journals on reproductive health, cancer screening and early detection, and HPV vaccine use, and numerous abstracts of presentations made in the United States, Canada, Mexico, and Europe. Dr. Lawson received several U.S. Public Health Service individual and group awards during his government service, is a member of the American Society for Colposcopy and Cervical Pathology (ASCCP) and currently serves on several ASCCP committees, including the Accreditation and Enduring Materials Committees.
